چکیده
THE INGESTION of a neurotoxin with subsequent paralysis of a large number of persons is not a commonplace event. One epidemic was reported in 19301 in which it was estimated that up to 20,000 persons in the southern United States suffered from drinking "ginger jake" with resultant "jake paralysis". The toxic ingredient involved was triorthocresyl phosphate. The same contaminant was responsible for a recent epidemic of poisoning with the resultant paralysis of approximately 10,000 natives of Morocco. The outbreak occurred around five cities in Morocco following the Feast of the Prophet at the end of August 1959. It affected only Moslems, and only those Moslems who lived in the poorer native quarter of each city. It was their habit to purchase cooking oil from bulk containers. The supply of regular cooking oil (olive) was adulterated by the addition of up to 20% of high-compression engine oil which contained triorthocresylphosphate (T.C.P.) The presenting complaint of most patients was aching pain and tenderness in the calves, with difficulty in walking and loss of light touch perception in the hands and feet. This sensory disturbance cleared in one to two days and was replaced by motor weakness involving, first, the muscles of dorsiflexion and eversion of the foot and a little later the calf muscles, progressing to inability to stand

Therapeutic Response to Folinic Acid in Me-thanol Poisoning Epidemic in Shiraz
Background: Methanol poisoning may result to death and permanent complications, sporadic cases of methanol poisoning are fairly rare and the largest experience are generally gained from managing methanol intoxication epidemics. The main metabolite of methanol is acid formic that is the prime metabolite responsible for toxic effects of methanol and since folate dependent systems are responsible ...
متن کاملElectrophysiological studies in acute organophosphate poisoning.
Electrophysiological studies in suicidal patients with organophosphate poisoning are reported. Patients often developed muscular weakness of variable severity owing to diplorisation block at nicotinic receptors. During such paralysis nerve conduction velocity and distal latencies were normal even in severely paralysed patients. The amplitude of the compound action potential was smaller than in ...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of the Acute Oral Toxicity of Brodifacoum to Birds
Single acute doses of the rodenticide brodifacoum were administered orally to 13 species of birds which are at risk from accidental poisoning during rabbit or possum control operations. Median lethal dose values from less than 1 to more than 20 mg/kg were obtained for some species. Gulls and Canada geese appear to be particularly susceptible. Several species, particularly the gulls, waxeyes, sp...

Introduction: Alcohol and beverages are one of the challenges in the field of hygiene and health today. By increasing the number of people suffering from covid-19 cases of alcohol and disinfectant poisoning increase and the reason was rumors spreading all over the country at the beginning of covid-19 prevalence. The aim of this study was to survey of alcohol poisoning and disinfectants cases in...
متن کاملLESSON OF THE MONTH Lead poisoning from complementary and alternative medicine in multiple sclerosis
A patient with multiple sclerosis is described who was treated for neurological symptoms thought to be a progression of his disease but subsequently found to be caused by lead poisoning secondary to the use of alternative medicine. His clinical signs improved with oral chelation therapy. Neurologists should consider asking about the use of complementary and alternative medicine before simply at...
